Search teams discovered the remains of Mallory Geis, an American climber who was the final missing member of a 10-person international mountaineering group that perished in an avalanche on Broad Peak several weeks ago. The recovery of Geis’s remains was facilitated by local volunteers, as confirmed by Irfan Arshad Khan, president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan. This expedition marked Geis’s inaugural endeavor to climb an 8,000-meter peak in Pakistan.
Aged 39, Geis resided in San Antonio, Texas. She had shared on social media earlier this year about shutting down her Pilates studio to embark on “a significant leap of faith into the unknown to explore life’s path. I have a feeling that there will be plenty of helmets, harnesses, and crampons involved.”
In a statement released earlier this month, her family described her as “a shining beacon cherished deeply by her loved ones and friends.”
The search mission, initiated on July 31 following the tragic avalanche on Broad Peak, was led by the acclaimed climber Nirmal Purja. Purja, also known as Nims Dai, a former British Army serviceman of Nepali descent, achieved the remarkable feat of conquering the world’s 14 highest peaks in a record-breaking 189 days in 2019, a remarkable accomplishment showcased in the Netflix documentary “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.” Regrettably, his record was surpassed in 2023.
Incidents like avalanches, falling ice and rock, high altitudes, and erratic weather conditions contribute to the frequent accidents on climbing expeditions in the mountainous regions of northern Pakistan.
