Toronto City Councillor Paula Fletcher has announced her retirement from city hall and confirmed that she will not be running for re-election in the upcoming municipal election scheduled for October. In a recent social media post on X, Fletcher shared that her decision to step down came after a reflective morning paddle boarding on Lake Ontario. She expressed gratitude for the 23 years she spent serving the diverse communities of Toronto-Danforth and revealed her intention to complete her current term, ending in mid-November.
During her contemplative moment on the water, Fletcher felt a sense of peace and made the significant choice to withdraw her name from the ballot, emphasizing the importance of passing the torch to the next generation. She emphasized the need for a new chapter, both for her personally and for the community she has faithfully served.
Reflecting on her tenure, Fletcher acknowledged the progress made in revitalizing the city’s waterfront, restoring the Don River, assisting local residents, and collaborating with esteemed colleagues such as Dan Leckie, Jack Layton, and Pam McConnell. She mentioned her service under former Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow and the transformative projects underway in the Toronto-Danforth area.
Fletcher acknowledged the unfinished work in the community but highlighted achievements such as the ongoing waterfront transformations, the establishment of Biidaasige Park, and the initiation of a housing project at Danforth and Greenwood Avenues, expected to provide new affordable housing options and a permanent venue for Le Théâtre français de Toronto.
Following Fletcher’s retirement announcement, Sara Ehrhardt, the current Toronto District School Board trustee for Toronto-Danforth, declared her candidacy for the Ward 14 council seat. Ehrhardt expressed her commitment to continuing the progress and representing the community effectively.
In her reflections, Fletcher expressed pride in the collaborative accomplishments achieved during her tenure, including the development of the Red Door Shelter, Crow’s Theatre integration into condo developments, infrastructure enhancements at local parks, and the installation of separated bike lanes on Danforth for cyclists’ safety.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow commended Fletcher’s immense contributions to the city, particularly highlighting her leadership in the Port Lands revitalization and advocacy for tenant protections through the renovictions bylaw. Chow praised Fletcher’s dedication to community service and wished her a fulfilling retirement.
Additionally, Coun. Alejandra Bravo of Ward 9, Davenport, extended gratitude to Fletcher for her impactful legacy, acknowledging her advocacy for various critical issues, including affordable housing, fiscal responsibility, and support for the arts in the community. Bravo described Fletcher as a formidable advocate and a respected figure in local governance.
