“RCMP Investigate Theft of Community Mailbox in P.E.I.”

Published:

Prince Edward Island RCMP are currently investigating the theft of a community mailbox in Beach Point. The Kings District RCMP were notified after midnight on August 5 that the mailbox and its contents had been taken, while two other mailboxes were left intact at the location on Cape Bear Road. Approximately 15 households have been impacted by this incident, according to Cpl. Gavin Moore, the media relations officer for P.E.I. RCMP.

Cpl. Moore highlighted the significance of these mailboxes, emphasizing their sturdy construction and the substantial effort required to remove them. He noted that the investigation is ongoing, particularly due to the unusual nature of such thefts in rural areas of P.E.I., where there is typically minimal activity during late hours.

Canada Post has confirmed its awareness of the situation and stated that its security and investigations teams are collaborating with the RCMP. The stolen community mailbox was replaced on August 17, with mail delivery scheduled to resume on August 21. In the interim, affected residents were able to collect their mail at the Murray Harbour Post Office, and new mailbox keys will be available for pickup starting August 20.

Regarding the security measures, Canada Post asserted their commitment to safeguarding the mail but declined to disclose specific details publicly to maintain their effectiveness. The organization refrained from providing further comments while the investigation into the theft is ongoing.

Cpl. Moore emphasized the rarity of such incidents involving community mailboxes and mentioned that potential charges could include theft and property damage. He urged anyone with information regarding the theft to contact Kings District RCMP or Crime Stoppers anonymously. Stressing the importance of even the smallest details in aiding investigations, he encouraged individuals to come forward with any relevant information that could assist in resolving the case.
