At a commemoration event marking the 9/11 anniversary at the College of the North Atlantic campus in Gander, N.L., the focus was on kindness and compassion. However, underlying tensions stemming from recent sharp criticisms of Canada by U.S. leaders and an escalating trade dispute were also evident.
Expressing sadness over the treatment of Canada by U.S. President Donald Trump and his team, Sue Riccardelli from New Jersey emphasized that most Americans do not share the same sentiments. She highlighted the strong bond between Americans and Canadians, acknowledging Canada’s support not only during 9/11 but throughout their enduring relationship.
Karry Derringer Cashin, also from New Jersey, echoed similar sentiments, feeling the current administration lacks kindness and expressing a need to apologize to Canadian friends.
During the event, attention was drawn to the achievements of the charity Pay It Forward 9/11, founded in response to the 2001 terrorist attacks. Inspired by Newfoundland and Labrador’s response, the charity encourages individuals to perform acts of kindness in memory of the attack victims, mirroring the themes in the popular musical “Come From Away.”
Kevin Tuerff, the charity’s founder, highlighted the global impact of the organization, which has spurred countless acts of kindness worldwide. Despite the positive stories shared during the event, there was an underlying tension due to escalating diplomatic issues.
U.S. President Trump’s threats to Canadian sovereignty and his disparaging remarks towards Canadian leaders were acknowledged. Tuerff candidly addressed the strained relations, emphasizing the enduring bond between Americans and Canadians, receiving resounding support from the audience.
Expressing embarrassment over the rhetoric from Washington, Tuerff and other attendees voiced hope for improved relations between the two countries in the future. Maureen Murray, a visitor to Gander since being stranded there 25 years ago, remained optimistic, viewing the current challenges as temporary hurdles in the longstanding relationship between the U.S. and Canada.
