After about a year and a half since alcohol products from the United States were removed from liquor stores in P.E.I., there are indications that they may soon make a return. This action was taken in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods, resulting in the removal of all American wines, beers, and spirits from P.E.I. liquor store shelves.
During a first ministers’ conference, Prime Minister Mark Carney urged Canada’s premiers to lift the ban on U.S. alcohol. P.E.I. Premier Rob Lantz mentioned that progress was being made towards a potential deal, although some details still needed to be ironed out. He expressed optimism about the agreement being mutually beneficial and emphasized the importance of provinces playing their part.
Negotiations between Canada and the United States are ongoing to reach a resolution that would prevent new U.S. tariffs on around $30 billion worth of Canadian goods, including steel, aluminum, lumber, automobiles, dairy, and American alcohol. Lantz highlighted that P.E.I. had managed well during the trade disputes and emphasized a collaborative “Team Canada approach” among provinces.
Recently, the P.E.I. government instructed the Liquor Control Commission to reintroduce existing U.S. products back onto the shelves, with profits generated being donated to local food banks. As of the end of July, a significant amount of U.S. alcohol remained in storage, with a substantial portion already sold, and a considerable sum directed towards charity.
Anticipating the potential return of American alcohol to P.E.I. stores, Lantz emphasized that Islanders would demonstrate their support through their purchasing decisions. While acknowledging Canadian frustrations over past treatment, he noted positive strides in negotiations and readiness among provinces to fulfill their roles in the process.
