Following a “mass shooting incident” that left three individuals injured in Fort Smith early Saturday, two individuals have been taken into custody as the shelter-in-place order has been lifted, according to N.W.T. RCMP. Police have indicated that there are indications suggesting a targeted attack.
Although it is still early in the investigation, authorities have detained two persons of interest. At this stage, it cannot be confirmed if these individuals are connected to the incident. A police update around 4 p.m. MT stated that normal activities can resume and there is no immediate threat to the community. However, there will be an increased police presence as the investigation progresses.
The incident, which involved shots fired outside a local business in the community with a population of just over 2,000, occurred at approximately 2:12 a.m. Witnesses reported that the shooting took place outside Dirty O’Fergies bar during the conclusion of the Fireweed Festival’s opening event.
The injured parties are currently receiving medical attention, with their identities undisclosed by the police. Emergency response teams from N.W.T. and Yukon are supporting the RCMP in the investigation, utilizing police dogs, remote piloted aircraft, and the major crimes unit.
Described as a male with a heavy build, medium complexion, black hair, and facial hair, wearing a grey sweater, the suspect is believed to be armed. The public has been urged not to approach the individual but to contact the RCMP immediately if sighted. While the RCMP shared images of the suspect, they have cautioned against circulating AI-generated images that do not match the suspect’s actual description.
Fort Smith Mayor Dana Fergusson has called for calm within the community, emphasizing that the incident does not reflect the community’s character. Fergusson, who was present at the scene during the incident, recounted the events that unfolded and expressed sadness over the unnecessary violence.
Despite the tragic event, the Fireweed Festival will continue as planned, as indicated by an update on Facebook. The festival organizers have reassured the public that there is no ongoing risk associated with the event. They acknowledge the seriousness of the incident and respect individuals who may choose not to attend. The organizers have drawn inspiration from the fireweed flower, symbolizing resilience and strength after adversity.
