A suspected Ebola case at a Montreal hospital turned out to be a false alarm, leading to the lifting of emergency isolation measures, according to officials. The patient, a woman, arrived at Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM) late Thursday displaying symptoms of the disease. Upon identifying the suspicious symptoms, the hospital promptly enacted necessary isolation protocols, as stated by Irène Marcheterre, a CHUM spokesperson. All required safety measures were implemented, with assurances that there was no threat to the public. Subsequently, a negative Ebola test result for the patient was reported by Ellen Caracas before 8 p.m., leading to the removal of emergency protocols.
This incident occurred in the context of the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has claimed numerous lives in recent months. Marcheterre could not verify if the patient had traveled from the affected region, citing a lack of information on the woman’s travel history.
