Voters in Sudbury participating in a recent CBC News poll on crucial municipal election topics have spotlighted addressing homelessness as a top concern. They have also emphasized the importance of financial transparency and better infrastructure for roads.
Mayoral candidates have underscored that tackling issues related to unsheltered individuals, many of whom require mental health support and substance abuse rehabilitation, is not solely the responsibility of the municipal government. They have indicated that collaboration with provincial and federal authorities is crucial in addressing these complex challenges.
In response to the survey, numerous participants acknowledged the need for a multi-level government approach but expressed the view that the municipal administration should be more assertive in pursuing effective solutions.
Survey respondents highlighted the necessity for enhanced housing options, mental health services, and rehabilitation programs. Alana Zinger, a nurse at Health Sciences North, voiced concerns about the expanding population at the Energy Court encampment in downtown Sudbury, expressing apprehension about the city’s current trajectory.
Zinger recommended increased housing availability and improved access to treatment services as essential steps to reverse the negative trend.
