Essex County paramedics have come to a tentative agreement, averting a potential strike scheduled to commence on Friday, as confirmed by the union on Tuesday morning. CUPE Local 2974, representing approximately 340 paramedics at Essex-Windsor EMS, disclosed that a preliminary deal was reached on Monday night following negotiations initiated by the county earlier that day.
James Jovanovic, the local president, expressed relief at the development, revealing that discussions were progressing positively after facing certain obstacles that weren’t solely financial in nature. The union and the county are expected to finalize the agreement, which, once approved, will be retroactive to April 1, 2026, following the expiration of the previous contract.
County of Essex CAO, Sandra Zwiers, emphasized the vital role played by Essex-Windsor EMS paramedics and support staff in the community, underscoring the significance of the tentative deal. She commended both parties involved for their dedication and commitment throughout the bargaining process.
Paramedics were on the brink of striking this Friday morning following unsuccessful negotiations last week, with EMS workers voting in favor of strike action back in February. Despite concerns raised by the union regarding staffing, mental health support, and compensation, Jovanovic indicated that the gap between the two sides was relatively narrow.
Essex County Council is set to review the agreement on Wednesday, with the union planning information sessions for its members on Thursday and Friday to discuss the details. Final voting results are anticipated by the weekend, with Jovanovic expressing optimism about reaching a resolution and avoiding a potential strike scenario.
The specifics of the agreement will remain undisclosed until the ratification process concludes, as stated by the county.
