Metro Vancouver is informing outdoor enthusiasts about the upcoming closure of the Grouse Grind trail, one of the region’s most popular hiking trails. The closure is scheduled for a period of four weeks, from October 13 to November 13, to facilitate seasonal maintenance activities. Crews will be focusing on repairing and replacing steps, staircases, and retaining walls along the trail, as announced by the Metro Vancouver Regional District.
Due to the steep and technical terrain of the route, Metro Vancouver has deemed a complete closure necessary, as there are no viable detour options available. During this time, hikers are encouraged to explore the BCMC trail, a 2.9-kilometre hike that shares the same trailhead and leads to the summit of Grouse Mountain. Described as a “challenging” trail by Grouse Mountain, the BCMC typically takes around two to two-and-a-half hours to complete.
For those embarking on the BCMC trail, it is recommended to wear durable hiking footwear with adequate ankle support, carry sufficient water and snacks, and have an extra layer of clothing on hand. Safety advocates emphasize the importance of packing the “10 essentials” whenever venturing onto mountain trails.
