Ottawa native Gabriela Dabrowski and her doubles partner from Brazil, Luisa Stefani, secured a spot in the semifinals of the Wuhan Open tennis tournament following a hard-fought 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory against the pair of Giuliana Olmos from Mexico and Ingrid Neel from Estonia on Friday. Despite committing 22 unforced errors and facing nine break points, the top-seeded duo managed to save seven break points and converted three of their six break-point opportunities against Olmos and Neel.
Their next challenge in the semifinals will be against the fifth-seeded team comprising Nicole Melichar-Martinez from the United States and Cristina Bucsa from Spain at the WTA 1000 tournament on Saturday. Dabrowski and Stefani’s momentum is strong after recently causing a 6-1, 6-2 upset over the top-seeded pair of Katerina Siniakova and Zhang Shuai at the China Open final last week. This victory marked their fifth title of the season and their seventh triumph as a team.
