The small community of Enterprise, N.W.T., still grapples with the aftermath of a devastating wildfire that struck three years ago, leaving residents feeling disheartened due to the lack of events and children in the area. Despite the challenges, there is a sense of optimism among the few remaining residents who are determined to restore the hamlet to its former vibrancy.
Following the 2023 wildfire, Enterprise has faced administrative instability with a series of leadership changes, prompting the territory to intervene on two occasions. Recently, John Leskiw Sr. assumed the role of mayor, aiming to bring stability and a sense of calm after years of political unrest.
With only a handful of families returning to Enterprise, Leskiw Sr. is focused on rebuilding, starting with attracting new commercial ventures to revitalize the community. He expressed hope that eliminating internal conflicts will pave the way for a successful restoration.
Former community organizer Evellyn Coleman, who remains in Enterprise with her husband Pat, reminisces about the social gatherings that used to define the community, such as the annual jamboree and seniors’ coffee events. Many residents who lost their homes in the wildfire lack the financial means to rebuild, hindering their return to Enterprise.
Despite the challenges, Evellyn is hopeful that under the leadership of Leskiw Sr. and the new council, Enterprise can regain its former glory. The Colemans find solace in simple joys like gardening and working on equipment, emphasizing the untapped potential they see in the community.
While the road ahead may be long for those looking to return to Enterprise, the spirit of resilience and hope remains strong among its residents, including the Colemans.
