The Prince Edward Island Teachers’ Federation presented four recommendations to Members of the Legislative Assembly on Thursday to tackle issues related to behavior and violence in public schools across the province. Federation president Andy Doran highlighted instances of disruptive behavior, self-harm, and aggression among students in classrooms during a legislative committee session. He emphasized the importance of having behavior resource staff in schools to assist teachers in managing such situations effectively.
Doran stressed the need for consistent support for students facing crises and urged the government to ensure that every school has behavior support staff. The federation emphasized the significance of Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) programs and the role of behavior resource teachers in early intervention to prevent escalating situations.
The federation’s recommendations to the government included increasing the number of behavior resource staff in schools, establishing learning centers within schools for student support, enhancing off-site alternative education programs, and appointing dedicated principals for alternative education settings. Schools that have implemented behavior resource staff have reported reduced disruptions and improved overall attitudes among students.
Education Minister Robin Croucher acknowledged the positive reception of the PBIS pilot program in schools over the past two years and emphasized its continued expansion as a departmental priority. The impact of the PBIS program on schools, students, educators, and support staff is being evaluated through a report by the University of Prince Edward Island.
Green Party MLA Karla Bernard and PC MLA Susie Dillon expressed support for the federation’s recommendations, emphasizing the importance of providing appropriate support to address the diverse needs of students for a successful educational experience. They advocated for additional behavior support staff and educational assistants in classrooms to ensure that all students receive the necessary support for their academic growth.
