A suspect in the mass shooting incident in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., has been formally charged by a grand jury in Washington state for conspiracy to murder individuals in a foreign country. The indictment of James Bryant, aged 30, establishes the legal grounds for prosecutors to proceed with the case. Emily Langlie, representing the U.S. Attorney’s Office, mentioned that the issuance of the indictment would lead to the cancellation of a preliminary hearing scheduled for October 20.
Bryant, who identifies with she/her pronouns and goes by the name Melody according to her legal team, was denied bail a day prior to the indictment on Wednesday. The U.S. Department of Justice released a statement outlining Bryant’s involvement in advancing the plot for the school shooting. The document specifies various actions taken by Bryant in furtherance of the conspiracy.
The tragic event in Tumbler Ridge resulted in the deaths of eight victims, including students and a teacher. The indictment against Bryant, a resident of Bellingham, Wash., alleges her agreement to record and broadcast the shooting, providing advice to the shooter on the targets and weapons, and sending money for purchasing materials related to the attack.
The Department of Justice emphasized that the charge of conspiracy to murder in a foreign country carries a potential sentence of life imprisonment. It also clarified that the accusations against Bryant are yet to be proven in court. The case is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd Greenberg in collaboration with the Justice Department’s National Security Division. Jesse Van Rootselaar, the perpetrator of the Tumbler Ridge shooting, took her own life at the school on February 10.
