The Atlantic Veterinary College, part of the University of Prince Edward Island, is planning significant enhancements to its HVAC system to ensure its accreditation remains intact. Tim Walker, UPEI’s vice-president of administration and finance, mentioned that the building, constructed many years ago, has outdated systems that have not kept pace with modern requirements. Ensuring an environment conducive to animal welfare, student well-being, and staff comfort is a top priority for the institution.
The proposed five-year capital plan for the HVAC upgrades amounts to approximately $27.1 million. Walker emphasized the importance of executing the project meticulously to allow the 330,000-square-foot facility to remain operational during the renovation period. Losing accreditation due to inadequate facilities would have severe consequences, affecting not only the college’s reputation but also the support from various provinces that recognize the importance of having an Atlantic veterinary college.
The funding for the project involves an interprovincial agreement, with provincial partners demonstrating foresight in understanding the ramifications of potential accreditation loss. The AVC caters to a diverse range of animals, from livestock such as horses and cows to companion animals like kittens and puppies, highlighting the critical role of proper air circulation in maintaining optimal conditions.
Walker stressed the necessity of a phased approach to minimize disruptions to students, faculty, staff, and the animals under their care. Ensuring comfort and safety for both humans and animals is paramount in achieving the desired outcomes. Additionally, given the nature of the work at the AVC, proper handling of biomedical waste is crucial due to potential hazards it may pose.
The college also houses an emergency center, further underscoring the need for a carefully planned implementation of the HVAC upgrades. Walker reiterated the importance of a systematic and thorough approach to the project, emphasizing the significance of getting it right and minimizing any adverse impacts.
