Canada’s top young curlers are set to compete for a national championship in Thunder Bay. Curling Canada recently announced that the 2028 Canadian Under-18 Curling Championships will take place from April 2 to April 8, 2028, at the Thunder Bay Tournament Centre.
According to Andrew Sinclair, the chair of the host committee, the event is expected to draw 42 teams, each comprising four to five young athletes and a coach. Additionally, a significant number of parents and grandparents are anticipated to attend, making it a tourism boost for the city.
Paul Pepe, Thunder Bay’s tourism manager, emphasized the economic impact of the bonspiel, estimating it to be around $2 million. He highlighted the importance of events like this in filling hotel capacity during typically slower periods, contributing to the local economy.
Pepe also mentioned that hosting prestigious events like the U18 championship and previous events such as the Grand Slam of Curling and Scotties Tournament of Hearts helps enhance Thunder Bay’s reputation as a sought-after host city for future events.
The Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC) recently announced a $250,000 contribution from its Tourism Development Fund for the upcoming Grand Slam of Curling event in December. This event, featuring 16 men’s and 16 women’s teams, is projected to have a substantial economic impact of $5 million.
Sinclair expressed his optimism that the 2028 U18 championships will not only promote the sport of curling in Thunder Bay but also inspire youth participation, aligning with the efforts of local curling clubs. He highlighted the event as a significant opportunity to showcase the sport to aspiring young athletes in the area, fostering excitement and enthusiasm for curling.
