All lanes on the Honoré-Mercier Bridge have been reopened following the repair of a cracked steel beam over the weekend, as announced by Quebec’s Transport Ministry on Sunday evening. The discovery of the crack during maintenance work led to the closure of a Montreal-bound lane last Tuesday, causing significant traffic delays during rush hour. In response to the incident, local leaders on the South Shore reiterated their push for improved transportation options, including the potential construction of a new bridge.
The Transport Ministry expressed satisfaction with the repair work conducted over the weekend, which focused on preventing the crack from spreading and enhancing the structural integrity of the affected bridge section. Additionally, motorists were reminded that tolls on Highway 30, which had been temporarily suspended last week, are now back in effect.
The Honoré-Mercier Bridge serves as a crucial connection between Montreal and the South Shore. The section impacted by the cracked beam was added in 1963 to expand the bridge’s capacity with two additional lanes, while the original segment built in 1934 now accommodates southbound traffic.
