Yellowknife’s two educational districts have revealed the names of the trustees elected to their boards following the recent municipal election. Both Yellowknife Catholic Schools (YCS) and Yellowknife Education District No. 1 (YK1) each have seven members elected to serve on their respective boards.
The elected individuals for YK1 are Jillian Bancroft, Barbara Bell, Stacy Ridgely, Allan Shortt, Billie-Jean Smith, Brianna Spicer, and Spencer Tracy. The new YK1 board will be officially sworn in on November 2 at 12:10 p.m. at the YK1 district office.
Yellowknife Catholic Schools shared further details on their election results. The winning candidates for YCS are Tina Schauerte with 668 votes, Matthew Yap with 648 votes, Susan Waddell with 547 votes, Sara Flaherty with 510 votes, Melanie Williams with 448 votes, Megan Richards with 411 votes, and Alex Mulooki with 362 votes.
YCS expressed gratitude to all candidates for their participation, emphasizing the commitment to students, families, and the mission of Catholic education. Trustees play a crucial role in overseeing the governance of the school board, including budget approvals and the appointment of the superintendent who manages daily operations. It is not a requirement for trustees to have a child enrolled in the schools they oversee.
This election marked the first time that Elections N.W.T. was involved in managing school board elections in Yellowknife.
