Canadian alpine skier Valérie Grenier announced that she suffered a knee injury during training for the upcoming season and will need surgery. Grenier shared a photo on her Instagram showing her on crutches, revealing that the injury occurred while preparing for the World Cup opener in Soelden, Austria, which is scheduled for this weekend.
The athlete, hailing from St. Isidore, Ontario, and aged 29, is a three-time Olympian with a total of six World Cup medals, three of which are gold in giant slalom events. Grenier mentioned that she is heading home to assess the injury’s severity, with surgery scheduled for Friday to determine the full extent of the damage.
In her most recent triumph on the World Cup circuit, Grenier clinched victory on March 25 in a race held in Norway. Additionally, she secured consecutive wins in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia in 2023 and 2024, with the first win marking the first time a Canadian woman had won a World Cup grand slalom event in 49 years.
