Denny Rodgers, the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing Inuvik Boot Lake, has been selected to join the cabinet of the Northwest Territories (N.W.T.) government, although the specific position has not been disclosed yet.
During a session of the N.W.T. Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, Rodgers was uncontested in his appointment to fill the seat left vacant by former health minister Lesa Semmler, who resigned as an MLA in September. Expressing gratitude for the opportunity, Rodgers emphasized the dedication required from all members in his speech.
Having been elected in the 20th Legislative Assembly in 2023, Rodgers brings a wealth of experience, having previously served for eight years on Inuvik’s town council and three years as the town’s mayor.
The 20th Legislative Assembly follows a tradition of cabinet representation from various regions, with only MLAs from Monfwi, the Sahtu, Inuvik Boot Lakes, and Mackenzie Delta eligible to vie for the position, with Rodgers being the sole nominee. The specific portfolio that Rodgers will assume has not been disclosed yet, with a formal confirmation expected during the ongoing session.
In a separate development, a byelection is scheduled for November 24 to elect a new MLA for Inuvik Twin Lakes.
