A fresh board of directors has been appointed to supervise London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), with the quest for a new CEO in progress, as confirmed by hospital authorities on Wednesday. The identities of the new board members are yet to be disclosed, with plans to unveil them on November 18, as stated by David Musyj, LHSC’s provincially assigned supervisor.
Musyj emphasized the importance of a volunteer board of directors in governing a hospital, stating that it is crucial to return to that framework. This development coincides with LHSC’s efforts to tackle a substantial budget shortfall and navigate a significant restructuring in response to allegations of fraud and mismanagement.
Following a provincial takeover, Musyj was appointed to steer the hospital network back on course, after the entire previous board of directors stepped down, and the former CEO was dismissed. Musyj’s report in June highlighted the board’s failure to provide adequate oversight, particularly concerning executive decision-making leading up to 2024.
Expressing optimism, Musyj believes the new board will reinstate proper oversight and governance. He highlighted the streamlining of LHSC’s governance structure, the implementation of corporate policies to address ongoing issues, and the reinforcement of checks and balances to prevent future problems.
The search for the new board members commenced on June 17, with applications closing on July 31. The selected members are currently undergoing onboarding, with their identities set to be publicly announced on November 18. The inaugural public meeting of the board is scheduled for January 2027, according to Musyj.
In parallel, the recruitment process for LHSC’s next CEO is set to begin with a job posting expected to go live in late October or early November. The aim is to finalize the selection of a candidate by the first quarter of 2027, following consultations with community agencies and hospital partners to shape the ideal profile for the upcoming CEO.
Regarding LHSC’s financial status, Musyj mentioned that progress is being made in gradually reducing the budget deficit, aided by financial backing from the Ontario government. While the support is anticipated to guide LHSC towards a balanced financial position, a chronic deficit is expected to persist until the year’s end. Musyj indicated that concrete figures are not yet available for disclosure.
