On the initial day of early voting leading up to the upcoming referendum, Elections Alberta reported that approximately 174,530 individuals participated in casting their votes at polling stations throughout the province. This marked the commencement of a five-day period for early, in-person voting for the October 19 referendum, which includes nine varied questions covering topics from constitutional matters to immigration, along with a tenth query regarding potential Alberta secession from Canada.
Preparations for referendum day have been intensifying over several months, with Elections Alberta projecting a historic voter turnout of around 85 percent. Interest from voters has been robust, evident by the significant demand for mail-in ballots, with approximately 658,000 such ballots requested last month. To date, Elections Alberta has received and processed a total of 418,000 completed special ballot packages.
The advance voting period, running from October 13 to October 17 before the referendum day on October 19, has seen substantial public engagement. Notably, one polling station in Calgary experienced a lineup even before opening on Tuesday morning, potentially indicating high early voter turnout. Individuals who did not request a mail-in ballot or failed to return one on time have the opportunity to vote at their designated advance voting location within their electoral district, avoiding the need to wait until October 19.
Elections Alberta disclosed that over 70,000 applications have been submitted to work as election officers, with more than 46,000 individuals already hired to assist in facilitating the voting process. There are currently over 300 advance polling stations operational across the province, offering convenient voting access to residents. Detailed information on polling station locations for both advance polls and the referendum day is accessible through the Elections Alberta searchable database.
For details on the referendum questions and acceptable forms of identification, voters are encouraged to visit the Elections Alberta website. Notably, in the 2023 provincial election, there were 757,453 advance poll ballots cast out of a total of 1,764,915 valid ballots recorded throughout Alberta.
