Ontario Provincial Police have announced that charges have been pressed against a driver of a transport truck and the company based in Edmonton that employs him following an incident on Highway 17, located east of Mattawa, on Sunday. According to a news release issued on Wednesday, OPP reported that the driver’s documentation indicated that the journey from Kenora to North Bay was completed in only 12 hours. However, Google Maps estimates that the 1566 km route along Highway 17 typically takes close to 17 hours to travel. The driver is facing multiple charges, including speeding, operating a vehicle without a functional speed-limiting system, surpassing the permitted 13-hour daily driving limit, altering records or documents, and neglecting to provide required information. While the Edmonton-based carrier was not specifically named by police, they disclosed that the company is facing three charges, including allowing the operation of a vehicle lacking a functional speed-limiting system or an electronic logging device.
