In less than a fortnight, the residents of Alberta will participate in a referendum that includes a crucial question regarding the potential initiation of a binding vote on the province’s separation from Canada. As the countdown continues, CBC Radio’s program, “Calgary Eyeopener,” opened its airwaves to address any last-minute queries about the voting procedures. Host Loren McGinnis engaged in a discussion with Maia Hanrahan, a media representative from Elections Alberta, to provide clarity on the process.
During the conversation, Hanrahan clarified that voters can verify the receipt of their special ballot package online using the link provided in their confirmation email. If the package has not been received, individuals still have the option to vote in person. Notably, with less than eight business days remaining, over 500,000 voters are urged to promptly return their special ballot packages by mail.
Regarding the verification process for mail-in ballots, Hanrahan explained that different methods are employed to ensure the validity of special ballots. Applicants undergo scrutiny at various stages, such as comparing their details with voter registration and submitting a completed package with the required documentation.
In response to concerns about ballot integrity, Hanrahan reassured that all returned ballots and completed packages are accepted regardless of folding errors or minor damage like water spills. She emphasized that legible ballots would be counted, and voters with concerns could contact the Elections Alberta service team for assistance.
Hanrahan also addressed the challenges of incomplete submissions, highlighting the importance of providing missing information promptly to facilitate the verification process. Additionally, she clarified the options available for voters facing accessibility issues or discomfort with email communication, emphasizing alternative methods for participation in the referendum.
As for the release of special ballot results, Hanrahan disclosed that counting would commence on October 19 at 5 p.m., with results being published once all voting stations have closed to ensure accuracy and transparency. Furthermore, she highlighted the hiring process for temporary employees and underscored the neutrality and security measures upheld by Elections Alberta to safeguard the electoral process against fraudulent activities.
In conclusion, Hanrahan emphasized Elections Alberta’s commitment to conducting fair and impartial electoral events, addressing any issues promptly, and ensuring voter trust and inclusivity throughout the referendum. She encouraged individuals with concerns or questions to reach out to the service center for assistance and reiterated the organization’s dedication to delivering a transparent and accessible voting experience for all eligible electors.
