Back-to-school shopping is in full swing, accompanied by the onset of sales tax holidays. Beginning in Florida, the sales tax holidays will extend for a month until August 20, as reported by the Federation of Tax Administrators.
During this time, specific school supplies including backpacks, calculators, clothing, computers, and lunchboxes will be exempt from sales tax. Additionally, items like learning aids will have price limits set at $30 or less, as per the Florida Department of Revenue.
In the upcoming months of August and September, various other states will also observe sales tax holidays. Individual retailers are complementing these tax-free days by offering exclusive back-to-school deals.
For instance, Target is featuring backpacks priced as low as $5 and lunch bags starting at $3. Meanwhile, Walmart recently announced a reduction in prices for back-to-school items to match 2019 prices, with products like a box of 24 crayons available for as little as 50 cents.
Old Navy is also joining in by offering discounts of up to 50% on children’s clothing and uniforms. However, the exception lies in new tech for students. The surge in AI data centers and the rising demand for memory chips and storage have led to increased costs for laptops, desktop computers, and other tech products, with budget options sometimes costing $100 more than usual.
Despite this, retailers such as Best Buy are still providing attractive deals. For instance, Best Buy is currently selling an HP OmniBook laptop for less than $600, down from its original price of nearly $1,000. Additionally, Apple is offering students a $100 discount on the newest MacBook Neo, priced at $599 with proof of enrollment.
