Electronic Arts, a leading video game publisher, has made the decision to close down BioWare, the renowned game development studio based in Edmonton, after over thirty years of operation. The closure was officially announced by BioWare on social media, following a report from Bloomberg indicating that 400 employees, including around 50 from BioWare, will be laid off. Additionally, the highly anticipated fifth installment in the Mass Effect series, which has been in development since 2007, has been canceled.
Established in 1995, BioWare was acquired by Electronic Arts (EA) in 2007. Trent Oster, co-founder of BioWare, expressed his sadness about the closure, stating, “It’s a pretty sad day. I mean, 30 plus years ago we built something I think was pretty awesome. And it’s pretty sad to see the end of the dream.”
The closure comes after the Redwood Shores, California-based EA completed a $55 billion US sale of its business to Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund PIF, investment firm Silver Lake Partners, and Affinity Partners, led by Jared Kushner, son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump.
BioWare, known for its immersive role-playing games such as Baldur’s Gate, Dragon Age, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Mass Effect, had a rich history of creating captivating single-player narratives. However, its venture into multiplayer shooters with the release of Anthem in 2019 failed to resonate with audiences and lacked the sustained popularity seen in games like Fortnite and Overwatch.
Reflecting on BioWare’s journey, Oster, now the CEO of gaming company Beamdog, reminisced about the studio’s evolution, from a small group of individuals to a global leader in the gaming industry. Despite recent challenges, including mixed reviews for titles like 2017’s Mass Effect: Andromeda and 2024’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard, BioWare was working on a new Mass Effect installment prior to the announcement of its closure.
The studio thanked its loyal fan base for their support over the years, acknowledging the impact players had in shaping the worlds created by BioWare. As the gaming community processes the news of BioWare’s closure, the legacy of the studio’s contributions to the industry remains a significant part of gaming history.
