Victor Lai of Canada secured the men’s singles bronze medal once again at the badminton world championships, maintaining his impressive performance. The 21-year-old athlete, hailing from Markham, Ontario, and seeded seventh, faced a tough challenge in the semifinals against European champion Alex Lanier from France. Despite a close match, Lai fell short with a score of 16-21, 21-13, 21-14 at the Indira Gandhi Arena in New Delhi.
In the badminton world championships, both semifinalists who do not progress to the final round are awarded bronze medals. Lai made history last year by clinching Canada’s inaugural medal at a badminton world championship when he defeated 2021 world champion Loh Kean Yew from Singapore in the quarterfinals held in Paris. This year, he continued his success by overcoming Loh in the round of 16 and then securing a victory against Rasmus Gemke from Denmark in the quarterfinals, earning his second world championship medal.
Impressively, Lai has significantly improved his world ranking, soaring from 50th to seventh place over the past year, showcasing his dedication and skill in the sport.
