A tragic incident unfolded after a 19-year-old young man became paralyzed and eventually passed away following a foolish dare with friends that took place eight years prior.
The incident occurred when Sam Ballard and his friends were gathered in the backyard of his family’s residence and spotted a slug passing by. In a jest, the group dared Sam to consume the slug.
Recounting the events of that evening in 2010, Jimmy Galvin, one of Sam’s close friends, explained the sequence of events. “We were having a casual wine night when a slug crossed our path,” he shared. “The idea of eating it came up, and Sam went for it impulsively.”
A few days later, Sam started experiencing leg discomfort, attributing it to consuming the slug. His mother, Katie, initially dismissed the concerns, believing that nothing serious would result from it.
However, the slug carried a parasite known as rat lungworm, which led to Sam developing eosinophilic meningoencephalitis, a form of meningitis. This condition sent him into a 420-day coma.
Upon awakening from the coma, Sam discovered that he was paralyzed from the neck down, requiring constant assistance for basic tasks like eating and using the restroom. This marked the end of his active lifestyle as a rugby enthusiast.
Living as a quadriplegic, Sam’s health deteriorated over the years until his untimely death at the age of 28 in November 2018. Surrounded by loved ones, his final words to his mother were a heartfelt “I love you.”
Despite the tragic outcome, Katie, Sam’s devoted mother, did not hold his friends accountable for the dare, emphasizing that they were simply engaging in friendly banter that night.
A friend who was present during the dare recalled Sam’s last words before consuming the slug, issuing a cautionary message to others. “Taking care of each other and refraining from risky dares can prevent life-altering consequences for you and your friends,” he advised.
