Essex County paramedics have averted a potential strike scheduled for Friday after reaching a tentative agreement, as announced by the union on Tuesday. The agreement, reached on Monday night following discussions initiated by the county earlier that day, represents a positive development for CUPE Local 2974, which represents approximately 340 paramedics within Essex-Windsor EMS.
James Jovanovic, the local president, expressed relief at the resolution, stating that several factors had initially stalled the agreement, with non-monetary issues playing a significant role. The county confirmed in a news release that the tentative deal, if approved, would be retroactive to April 1, 2026, following the expiration of the previous agreement.
County of Essex CAO Sandra Zwiers emphasized the crucial services provided by Essex-Windsor EMS paramedics and support staff, noting the challenging circumstances they often face. She commended the efforts of both sides in reaching a tentative agreement, acknowledging the dedication and time invested in the bargaining process.
The potential strike, which could have begun as early as Friday, was narrowly avoided after negotiations concluded without an agreement last week. Jovanovic mentioned that EMS workers had unanimously voted in favor of strike action in February, citing concerns related to staffing, mental health support, and compensation.
Essex County Council is expected to review the agreement on Wednesday, with the union planning information sessions for members on Thursday and Friday. While details of the agreement remain undisclosed until the ratification process is finalized, both parties are optimistic about the outcome, preferring a mutually beneficial deal over the prospect of a strike.
