A significant fire erupted at The Hippodrome pub in Market Drayton, Shropshire, prompting drinkers and diners to hastily evacuate the premises. Around 50 firefighters were summoned to combat the blaze, which originated from an open fire, causing patrons to move their drinks and meals outside as a precaution.
The historic establishment, once the town’s inaugural purpose-built cinema in 1927, became the focal point for eight fire crews that arrived at the scene following reports of the fire spreading. John Kirby, a patron from Wolverhampton, described the alarming moment when smoke emerged from the fire pit, leading to a quick evacuation after a fellow customer attempted to extinguish the flames.
Station manager Craig Jackson of Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that everyone was safely evacuated as firefighters, equipped with breathing apparatus and hosereel jets, worked to contain the fire. The incident, deemed accidental, was caused by hot embers falling through a defect in the fireplace, igniting the wooden floor and supporting structures of the raised seating area.
Thankfully, there were no casualties reported during the incident, with commendations extended to The Hippodrome’s management, staff, and patrons for their swift response and cooperation during the evacuation. While the fire caused damage to the floor, walls, and ceiling, the prompt actions of all involved ensured a safe outcome.
JD Wetherspoon’s spokesperson mentioned that the fire, originating from the pub’s open fire, had been contained without spreading further. Clean-up efforts were underway, with contractors scheduled to inspect and repair any necessary electrical and gas systems. The pub remained closed for the evening but was expected to resume normal operations the following day after thorough assessments.
