Atikameksheng Anishnawbek, located near Sudbury, Ontario, has initiated a collaborative project named Mukwa Energy with the aim of generating up to 30 job opportunities for community members. Teaming up with JDass Corp, the First Nation is operating a fuel blending facility that produces gasoline and diesel fuel for local business clients.
Chief Craig Nootchtai of Atikameksheng Anishnawbek mentioned that the facility has been operational for four years, with the First Nation now holding a majority stake in the venture. Currently, more than 80% of the workforce at the facility consists of Atikameksheng members, and with further expansion, they anticipate adding another 15 to 18 jobs.
Nootchtai noted that at present, twelve community members are employed at the facility. Navjot Dass, the managing director of JDass Corp, highlighted that the company has agreed to pay royalties to Atikameksheng Anishnawbek based on generated revenues. Additionally, the joint venture includes a commitment to ensure that 80% of the staff at the facility are of Indigenous descent.
Dass also mentioned plans to construct an ice hockey rink cover as part of a community benefit agreement.
