A supporter of the Labour party has taken action ahead of any government intervention to restrict children’s access to social media. Dale Vince, a vocal figure, criticized tech moguls Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg for what he perceives as their unrestricted influence on young people. Responding to parents’ primary concern, the founder of Ecotricity, a green energy company, has introduced a new mobile plan that enables children to make unlimited calls and texts but prohibits internet usage.
Wealthy entrepreneur Mr. Vince argued that a traditional phone plan is necessary due to the harmful material children encounter online, urging government officials to take measures. This move comes at a time when there is growing pressure on the government to implement a ban on social media access for individuals under 16. In the previous month, over 60 Labour Members of Parliament urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer to follow Australia’s lead, which initiated a ban in December. Various other nations are reportedly contemplating similar regulations. Starmer has not ruled out the possibility of implementing a ban, stating that “all options are being considered.”
Among Mr. Vince’s business ventures is Ecotalk, which utilizes EE’s mobile network and channels profits into land restoration and rewilding projects. The company has recently launched a new SIM-only mobile plan named Just Talk, offering unlimited UK calls and texts starting from £4 per month. Notably, this plan does not include internet access.
Mr. Vince expressed, “We have introduced the Just Talk tariff to prevent individuals like Musk and Zuckerberg from having unrestricted access to our children. This is the most requested feature by our customers, especially parents: a phone that facilitates communication without online distractions. This initiative reintroduces the concept of a basic phone and allows children to be children again. We are tackling the issue of irresponsible tech platforms exposing young people to undue pressure and risks.”
Ecotalk, established by Mr. Vince in 2018, is collaborating with Chris Packham, the presenter of Springwatch, who serves as the chief ecologist. Together, they are focused on reintroducing, rewilding, and replanting in two locations in Sussex and Devon.
