Operators of a mobile eatery in Inuvik have reported experiencing four break-ins within the last month, resulting in significant losses of valuable food items. The Amaruq food truck, which has been serving sandwiches, fries, all-day breakfast, and other specialties for over a year, is co-owned by Dustin Smith and Kieran Seaward. The truck has been stationed outside the Anglican church since the summer.
Amaruq recently shared a video on social media showing an individual kicking their sign off the sidewalk after hours. According to Smith, the perpetrators have consistently emptied the truck’s freezer during each break-in, leading to an estimated loss of $2,000 worth of frozen food on each occasion. Perplexed by the repeated targeting of their business, Smith expressed frustration, stating, “It’s upsetting because we have worked hard to get our business to where it is today. I just think it’s vandalism. We aren’t sure if they don’t like us. It’s uncomfortable.”
Eliza Firth, who runs a nearby craft store, expressed support for the food truck owners and urged anyone with information to come forward. She empathized with Smith and Seaward, saying, “I feel for Kieran and Dustin. We don’t know who is targeting them, if they are being targeted.” The Inuvik RCMP confirmed that they are actively investigating all four incidents based on the surveillance footage provided by the food truck. They have encouraged individuals with relevant information to contact the detachment for assistance.
