The Rural Municipality of Mount Stewart is hosting two complimentary mocktail evenings to provide an opportunity for individuals to learn the art of crafting non-alcoholic beverages and socialize in an alcohol-free setting. These sessions are being coordinated by Katharine MacDonald, the municipality’s chief administrative officer, who initiated the idea in response to local interest in creating more social opportunities.
MacDonald highlighted that various factors, such as religious beliefs, health conditions, or simply seeking alternative social activities, motivate people to abstain from alcohol consumption. The rise in interest in alcohol-free options is reflected in national trends, with Statistics Canada reporting a 20-year low in per capita alcohol consumption across the country.
Acknowledging the prevalent drinking culture at social gatherings in rural areas, MacDonald emphasized the importance of offering events that do not revolve around alcohol consumption, which can also address safety concerns related to transportation after such gatherings. The mocktail nights are inclusive, catering to adults with diverse interests and drinking habits, with the aim of providing an alternative beverage experience rather than promoting sobriety.
The initiative has received financial support from the P.E.I. Liquor Control Commission, which allocates a portion of its profits to community projects focused on reducing alcohol-related harms. The commission’s Finance Minister, Jill Burridge, commended the mocktail nights for their community-building and engagement aspects, meeting the criteria for funding support.
Alex Hendry, a bartender from Drinks Distilled, will lead the mocktail classes, noting the increasing demand for non-alcoholic options beyond typical choices like soda or sparkling water. The interactive events will involve participants in creating a variety of drinks, teaching techniques such as mixing and selecting appropriate glassware and ice. Attendees will also have the opportunity to taste commercial non-alcoholic beverages and discover high-quality alcohol-free alternatives.
Scheduled at the Mount Stewart Community Complex, the first mocktail evening is set for Friday, with the second session on Nov. 6. Residents can secure their spots by registering via email. This initiative aligns with the growing interest in non-alcoholic beverages, offering a social and educational experience for the community.
