Users attempting to visit the official website of the Government of the Northwest Territories encountered a notification stating that the site was undergoing maintenance on Wednesday. This action was taken as a precautionary measure by the territorial government in response to the identification of a global cybersecurity vulnerability.
Beau Stobbs, a senior communications officer with the N.W.T. government, explained that certain websites and online services were being temporarily disabled as a proactive step following the disclosure of the cybersecurity issue. Stobbs reassured that no territorial websites or systems had been compromised.
The Northwest Territories was not the only region affected by this situation. Government websites across Canada and worldwide experienced disruptions after cybersecurity researchers uncovered a security flaw in PHP, a widely used open-source programming language for numerous websites.
Evan Solomon, the federal minister of artificial intelligence and digital innovation, mentioned in a social media post that some Government of Canada websites were temporarily taken offline to safeguard government systems and Canadians’ information based on advice from the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security.
Various Canadian jurisdictions also responded to the cybersecurity concern differently. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador opted to temporarily shut down multiple services as a precaution, while Prince Edward Island introduced a simplified version of its website for the day.
The Government of Nunavut confirmed that they had taken measures to address the security issues by patching GN-managed systems and directing third-party vendors responsible for GN websites to take affected sites offline as a safety measure until security patches were applied.
Residents in the N.W.T. were advised by Stobbs to anticipate temporary disruptions as efforts continue to enhance system security. Technical teams are actively evaluating the technology environment and collaborating with partners to determine which websites and services can remain accessible safely.
