Evangeline Link, a 14-year-old, has completed her fifth and final 100-kilometer fundraising walk for Toronto youth charity Covenant House. Starting this tradition at the age of 10, Link has raised over $60,000 through her annual walks, totaling nearly 500 kilometers. Surrounded by cheers from family and supporters at the Roy Public House pub in Toronto’s east end, Link expressed her joy at completing the challenging walk relatively pain-free. Despite her decision to conclude the walks to focus on school as she enters Grade 11, Link remains committed to supporting Covenant House and its mission.
The journey began when Link embarked on her first fundraising walk from her grandparents’ house in Binbrook, near Hamilton, in 2022. Walking around 100 kilometers over three days to reach her home in Toronto, Link’s determination and dedication impressed her parents, Ryan and Teresita Link. Initially surprised by their daughter’s ambitious plan, they quickly supported her as she proved her commitment and resilience. Reflecting on her journey, Link acknowledged facing moments of doubt but persevered, inspired by the idea that others may not have the same opportunities to overcome challenges.
Completing this year’s trek, Link walked an average of 27 to 30 kilometers per day, raising over $65,000 in total, with $16,000 raised this year alone. Grateful for the support received over the past five years, Link emphasized the importance of resilience and unity in facing difficulties. Tara Defoe, the event manager at Covenant House Toronto, praised Link’s extraordinary achievement, highlighting the impact of the funds raised in preventing homelessness and supporting at-risk youth.
Evangeline Link’s dedication and compassion have left a lasting impression, with Defoe expressing confidence in her potential to make a positive difference in the world.
