CBC’s reality show, “The Assembly,” is back for a second season, featuring six new celebrity interviews and a larger cast of over 30 neurodivergent and autistic adults as the interviewers. Notable guests like Hudson Williams from “Heated Rivalry,” Zach Galifianakis of “The Hangover,” and Jay Baruchel from “This is the End” are among those facing the questions.
This season’s lineup also includes Ashley Callingbull, Miss Universe Canada, singer-songwriter Lights, and three-time Olympic hockey gold medalist Marie-Philip Poulin. Each celebrity undergoes an unscripted interview, delving into unexpected and personal topics beyond the usual promotional discussions.
The mix of familiar faces from the first season and new participants adds to the show’s uniqueness. “The Assembly” offers candid exchanges, humor, awkward pauses, and genuine connections, creating a space for both revelation and laughter simultaneously.
The show’s format is inspired by the French program “Les Rencontres du Papotin,” which premiered in 2022 with guests like Camille Cottin and French President Emmanuel Macron. The concept has since gained international recognition with versions featuring renowned personalities such as Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen, David Tennant, and Stephen Fry.
The inaugural season of “The Assembly” earned accolades, including a Canadian Screen Award for best direction, three Telly Awards, a Golden Sheaf Award at the Yorkton Film Festival, and a nomination for a Banff Rockie Award.
CBC executives Jennifer Dettman and Stephen Sawchuk express enthusiasm for the fresh and authentic energy brought by the interviewers in the first season, promising more heart, humor, and genuine conversations in the new season. Producer Sean De Vries highlights the show’s focus on human connections resonating with audiences.
Produced by Vancouver-based Small Army Entertainment, “The Assembly” Season 2 premieres on Sunday, Nov. 1, at 9 p.m. ET on CBC TV and CBC Gem, with extended “producer’s cuts” exclusively available on CBC Gem from 9 a.m. ET that day.
