U.S. President Donald Trump commemorated the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, affirming the nation’s commitment to honoring the victims and their families while also addressing ongoing U.S. military actions in Iran. This marked the second consecutive year that Trump participated in the ceremony at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C. Alongside his wife Melania, Trump listened as the names of the 184 individuals who perished at the Pentagon after American Airlines Flight 77 was hijacked were recited.
Reflecting on the events of September 11, 2001, Trump praised the resilience and unity displayed by the nation in the aftermath of the tragedy. However, both Trump and U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth utilized their speeches to justify the military operations against Iran that have been ongoing for over six months. Trump emphasized the efforts of service members in preventing the Islamic Republic of Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, while Hegseth made strong statements regarding the ongoing military actions.
The 9/11 attacks, orchestrated by al-Qaeda, involved the hijacking of four commercial airplanes. Two planes were flown into the World Trade Center towers, another crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and the fourth was intended for Washington, D.C., but was diverted by courageous passengers and crew members.
The commemoration in New York at Ground Zero saw Vice President JD Vance join former presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden, along with various officials. The event focused on reading the victims’ names with moments of silence throughout the day, following a tradition of avoiding political speeches.
Terry Strada, leading the 9/11 Families United group, broke tradition by criticizing the U.S. government’s handling of Saudi Arabia’s alleged involvement in the attacks. She highlighted the lack of justice and support for the families affected by the tragedy over the past 25 years.
This year’s ceremony included a special tribute to individuals who have since passed away due to illnesses related to exposure to toxic dust from the collapsed towers. The event also featured reflections from New York City’s first Muslim mayor, Zohran Mamdani, who emphasized the importance of remembering and honoring the victims, first responders, and community solidarity following the attacks.
Across the country, various memorial events were held to mark the anniversary, including ceremonies in Shanksville attended by Trump administration officials. The attacks on September 11 reshaped air travel regulations, security measures, and led to the creation of the Department of Homeland Security.
The aftermath of 9/11 also spurred the U.S.-led global war on terrorism, resulting in military interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan. While Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda, was killed in 2011, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the accused mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, is still awaiting trial at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Canada, under Prime Minister Jean Chrétien’s leadership, supported the U.S. military efforts in Afghanistan, with significant Canadian casualties during the deployment.
