Toronto Blue Jays’ power hitter Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has been cleared to resume play after coming off the seven-day injured list. He is set to make his return against the New York Yankees this Saturday.
Guerrero sustained an injury during a game against the Yankees in Toronto last week when he collided with New York’s rookie shortstop, George Lombard Jr., in a peculiar play at third base during the sixth inning. The impact of Lombard’s knee and thigh on Guerrero’s head caused his helmet to come off, but not before Guerrero scored the tying run.
After successfully passing his final concussion tests, Guerrero rejoined the team on Friday. He also participated in a minor league rehabilitation game for single-A Dunedin, where he doubled and took swings in the batting cage.
Following a 3-1 loss to the Yankees in Friday’s game, Guerrero was placed second in the batting order for Saturday’s match. In a corresponding move, the Blue Jays sent infielder/outfielder Davis Schneider to triple-A Buffalo.
Guerrero currently boasts a .263 batting average with seven home runs and 46 RBIs. Prior to the injury, he had a .310 batting average (7 for 29) in his last seven games.
