Olha Terletska, a talented singer, captured the hearts of millions with her moving solo performance in the King’s annual Christmas broadcast. Hailing from war-torn Ukraine, Olha found solace in music and now pays tribute to her late cousin, who tragically perished in battle. As a member of the Songs for Ukraine group, Olha’s rendition of Carol of the Bells at Westminster Abbey left audiences in awe.
In a heartfelt interview, Olha shared how she dedicates her performances to her cousin, Bohdan Izmailov, who bravely served in Ukraine’s Air Assault Brigade and lost his life during a special combat mission in 2023. Reflecting on her cousin’s memory, Olha expressed that every significant project reminds her of him, and she continues to honor his legacy through her music.
Describing Bohdan as a compassionate and selfless individual, Olha recounted their close bond growing up together in Mykolaiv, Ukraine. Despite the challenges of war, Olha fondly remembers her cousin as a kind-hearted soul with a generous spirit, always willing to help others.
Currently residing in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, Olha, along with her family, sought refuge in the UK under the Homes for Ukraine initiative in 2022. Joining the Songs for Ukraine choir, Olha’s talent was showcased in the King’s Christmas broadcast, where the choir performed a unique rendition of Carol of the Bells, composed by renowned Ukrainian musician Mykola Leontovych.
The choir, comprised of individuals who fled conflict, Ukrainian expatriates, and other members, was established in response to Russia’s invasion in 2022. Through the healing power of music, the choir aims to provide solace and comfort to those affected by the turmoil, offering a temporary respite from the harsh realities of war.
The performance at Westminster Abbey was a surreal and unforgettable experience for fellow singer Arina Koroletska, who moved to the UK with her family from central Ukraine. Overwhelmed with gratitude for the opportunity to sing after the King’s speech, Arina expressed her disbelief at being part of such a momentous occasion.
