After operating for seven years, the founder of the Yorkville Murals festival has announced that the upcoming event will be the final one. Alan Ganev, who initiated the festival in 2019 near his Yorkville gallery, expressed gratitude for the city’s past support but noted the absence of grants this year, leaving the organizers uncertain about the future.
Ganev highlighted the success of the free festival, which transformed Yorkville Avenue into an open-air gallery and drew over 70,000 visitors last year. While the event has historically relied on private investors for about 60% of its funding, Ganev emphasized the crucial role of grants in its operation. Despite a record-breaking year, the festival did not receive the expected funding, raising questions about the allocation process.
The city offers two main grants for festival organizers: The Cultural Festivals Funding Program and the Special Event Stabilization Initiative. Ganev revealed that Yorkville Murals had secured grants from both programs in the previous year. However, a statement from city spokesperson Kayla Lewis explained that due to high competition and limited resources, not all applicants, including Yorkville Murals, were able to receive funding this year.
In light of the festival’s closure, concerns have been raised about the distribution of grant funds. Councilor Dianne Saxe highlighted the importance of downtown festivals like Yorkville Murals and emphasized their value to the community. She referenced the recent success of Taste of the Danforth, which returned after receiving additional funding, underscoring the positive impact of such investments on cultural events.
Despite receiving support from the provincial Experience Ontario grant, Ganev acknowledged that without city backing, Yorkville Murals cannot continue. He expressed willingness to collaborate with the city or province to explore avenues for securing additional funding and potentially reviving the festival in the future. The last Yorkville Murals event is scheduled for this weekend.
