An elderly woman aged 80 lost her life in a collision involving two vehicles on the Trans-Canada Highway close to the Flat Bay community in western Newfoundland, as confirmed by law enforcement authorities. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police swiftly attended the incident at approximately 12:30 p.m. NT the following day, leading to the closure of both T.C.H. lanes near the Flat Bay Junction for approximately seven hours. Tragically, the woman, identified as an American by the police, was declared deceased at the crash site. Furthermore, a 79-year-old male companion in the same vehicle sustained severe injuries and was transported to Corner Brook hospital for treatment.
In response to the collision, emergency services also attended to the driver of the other vehicle, who was subsequently taken to the hospital for evaluation. Fortunately, the injuries sustained by the second driver were reported to be minor by law enforcement officials. While no updates on the medical conditions of the hospitalized individuals were disclosed in the latest statement released on Friday, authorities confirmed that no additional information would be publicly disclosed. Investigations into the root cause of the accident are actively ongoing, with the involvement of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to assist in the inquiry.
