“Kawhi Leonard Returns to Raptors in Mega Trade”

Published:

The long-awaited trade of Kawhi Leonard from the Los Angeles Clippers back to the Toronto Raptors has been finalized after over two months of negotiations. In return for the Raptors’ former championship-leading player, the team traded all-star forward Brandon Ingram, guard Gradey Dick, two unprotected first-round draft picks, a first-round pick swap, and two second-round picks.

The trade delay was due to an NBA investigation into a salary-cap circumvention scheme involving Leonard and the Clippers, which was exposed in a podcast by sports journalist Pablo Torre in September 2025. The investigation revealed that the Clippers funneled money to Leonard through undisclosed sponsorship deals with team-affiliated companies, including a $28 million deal with Aspiration. This led to severe penalties for the Clippers, including a $30 million fine, loss of five first-round draft picks, and suspensions for key executives.

Following Clippers owner Steve Ballmer’s acceptance of the NBA’s ruling, the trade with the Raptors was officially completed. Kawhi Leonard’s return to Toronto has been met with enthusiasm by fans hoping for a resurgence with the former Finals MVP back on the team.

However, there are concerns about Leonard’s age, injury history, and his lucrative contract. The Raptors are taking a calculated risk in acquiring an aging superstar who has faced significant injury challenges in recent seasons. Additionally, there are ethical questions surrounding Leonard’s involvement in the salary-cap circumvention scheme, even though he received minimal punishment compared to others involved.

As the Raptors welcome back Kawhi Leonard, the NBA community will be watching closely to see how the reunion unfolds and whether Leonard can recapture the magic that led Toronto to its first championship in 2019.
