Charlottetown’s weekend bus service has seen significant improvements recently. T3 Transit introduced new Saturday and Sunday trips on six routes, including the 2, 3, 10, 11, 12, and 23, now operating seven days a week. According to Coun. Trevor MacKinnon, this marks the largest service expansion since T3 Transit’s inception over 20 years ago.
The recent enhancements are part of a broader initiative that has seen a 15% increase in routes this year alone. MacKinnon noted that the decision to expand services came after a thorough public transit plan consultation in 2024, which garnered nearly 400 responses from both regular and non-traditional bus riders. The feedback highlighted a growing demand for improved services beyond typical working hours.
The first Sunday following the new routes’ introduction on August 16 saw a remarkable 40% increase in ridership compared to the usual levels for that time of year, as reported by T3 Transit. This surge in demand led to the implementation of additional weekend trips and an overall expansion of services to meet the evolving needs of the community.
To accommodate the increased demand and optimize service delivery, T3 Transit recently acquired two electric mini-buses and ordered 17 new buses since December 2025. Furthermore, route adjustments have been made to extend bus routes into residential areas, aligning with the city’s expanding population and the corresponding transportation needs.
Despite slight declines in international student ridership, overall transit demand in Charlottetown remains robust. MacKinnon emphasized that the general public’s reliance on transit is steady, with many commuters using the service to navigate the city efficiently and alleviate downtown traffic congestion. The expanded bus service not only addresses parking challenges but also contributes to reducing emissions and promoting sustainable transportation solutions.
