Layden is among the many fans in Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond who continue to cherish the band even after a decade since their last performance. The iconic Canadian rock band delivered their farewell show in Kingston, Ont., on August 20, 2016, before lead singer Gord Downie passed away in 2017 due to brain cancer.
CBC will be airing a rebroadcast of their final show, “The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration,” on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. NT. The band had made multiple appearances in Newfoundland over the years, with their last show in the province held at Mile One Stadium on April 8, 2015, where Layden was working as a photographer.
Reflecting on the show, Layden vividly recalls Downie’s captivating stage presence, describing it as a naturally theatrical performance filled with raw emotion in every lyric he sang. She treasures the photos she took during that memorable event, feeling privileged to have been part of Hip history.
Meanwhile, Linda Hart, who attended the band’s final performance in Kingston, joined thousands of others at a viewing party in Kingston’s Market Square. The event evoked a mix of emotions from pride to sadness, creating a sense of community united in celebrating The Tragically Hip’s music.
Rory Young, a dedicated fan who followed the band extensively, shared a unique encounter during a trip to St. John’s. He seized the opportunity to sneak into the band’s soundcheck, where he was approached by the tour manager but was allowed to stay, reflecting the band’s down-to-earth and friendly demeanor towards their fans.
Denise Myette fondly remembers meeting the band in St. John’s in 1991, where she interacted with Gord Downie and found him to be quirky and endearing. Layden also cherishes the personal moments she shared with the band beyond their performances, highlighting their warmth and welcoming nature.
The enduring love for The Tragically Hip is evident as fans like Layden and Hart continue to hold onto cherished memories of the band’s music and their impactful performances.
