In St. Petersburg, a Ukrainian assault caused a fire at an oil export terminal on Sunday, with Kyiv deploying over 1,000 drones in a major aerial attack on Russia. The incident occurred amidst escalating tensions between Ukraine and the United States, with President Donald Trump criticizing Ukraine for targeting Russian oil facilities.
According to local Governor Alexander Beglov, the attack resulted in one fatality and five injuries, igniting fires at the Petersburg Oil Terminal and the Ruchi oil depot. Additionally, logistics facilities of Russian retailer Ozon and a data center of tech giant VK were also hit.
Russia’s Ministry of Defence reported that 1,015 Ukrainian drones were neutralized across 15 Russian regions, including Crimea and the Black Sea. In a separate incident, Russia’s strikes on the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia led to one fatality and injuries to at least two people, including a six-year-old girl.
Amidst these events, President Trump announced an “energy ceasefire” between Russia and Ukraine, but Kyiv resumed attacks on Russian oil infrastructure shortly after. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy expressed dismay over Russia’s ongoing assaults on his country’s energy facilities, despite Trump’s call for a cessation of such actions. Zelenskyy highlighted that Russia had targeted Ukraine’s energy, oil, and gas sectors 76 times in the week following Trump’s ceasefire announcement.
