After undergoing surgery to correct a rare deformity, Benny the foal was seen eating just two hours later, astonishing his owner, Morgan Sheppard, who runs Living the Dream Stables in Brackley, P.E.I.
Benny was born with a wry nose, a condition that causes the nose and jaw to twist to one side. Before the surgery, Benny could still eat, nurse, and breathe, maintaining a good quality of life with assistance.
The decision to operate was made to enhance Benny’s long-term well-being and reduce the risk of pneumonia, a common concern for horses with wry nose. A pre-operative check at the Atlantic Veterinary College revealed mild pneumonia, leading to a brief delay in the surgery. However, with proper medication, Benny recovered swiftly.
The surgery, which was anticipated to last two to three hours, ended up taking about seven to eight hours. Despite the tension, Sheppard expressed relief that Benny came out of surgery successfully.
Following the operation, Benny spent about a week at the veterinary college before heading home. He is now recuperating well, consuming his regular amount of food and hay. Sheppard mentioned that Benny’s food intake was gradually increased post-surgery, ensuring proper digestion before advancing his diet and closely monitoring his progress.
The next phase involves allowing Benny to rest and eventually reintroducing him to other horses in approximately a week, depending on his recovery. Sheppard remains hopeful that Benny will eventually pursue a racing career, with plans for harness training to commence when he is around eighteen months old, allowing time for growth and recovery.
While the outcome is uncertain, Sheppard emphasized that they will proceed according to Benny’s pace, providing additional time if needed. She expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received from a broad audience beyond P.E.I., with approximately 19,000 individuals closely following Benny’s journey and contributing through GoFundMe donations and merchandise purchases.
Sheppard highlighted the message of Benny’s story, emphasizing that being different does not limit one’s aspirations. She believes Benny’s resilience serves as a testament to pursuing one’s goals despite challenges.
