In Kelowna, a quirky campaign slogan that went viral has led to 33-year-old Brady Rogers securing a seat on the City Council, despite his initial reluctance. Rogers, a small business owner and engineer, garnered 12,635 votes in the recent municipal election, placing him as the fourth most popular candidate.
Known for his self-deprecating humor, Rogers’ campaign featured slogans such as “How hard could it be,” “Just trying to pay my rent,” and “Let’s see what happens.” While his approach may have seemed satirical, Rogers emphasized that his platform was grounded in serious policy proposals aimed at addressing housing, transit, taxation, and homelessness issues in the city.
Although initially considering the idea of running for council as laughable, Rogers eventually embraced the opportunity, believing he possessed the necessary skills to make a positive impact. He highlighted the importance of authenticity and honesty in his campaign, reflected in his slogan, “Fine, I’ll do it.”
David Black, an associate professor at Royal Roads University, commended Rogers for blending satire with substantial policy ideas, creating a campaign that resonated with voters. Black emphasized the effectiveness of Rogers’ approach, which stood out in a crowded field of council candidates by offering a fresh and engaging alternative to traditional political campaigns.
Rogers expressed a sense of duty to bring a new perspective to the council and is prepared to dive into the responsibilities of a city councillor. As he prepares to begin his term, Rogers remains committed to making a meaningful contribution to the city of Kelowna by addressing key issues and working towards its improvement.
