Residents of Hudson’s Hope in British Columbia have voted in favor of borrowing up to $10 million to support the construction of a new community hall and multi-purpose gathering space. The decision was made through a referendum held on Saturday.
Hudson’s Hope, a small town with approximately 1,000 residents located near the Northern Rockies, about 85 kilometers west of Fort St. John, faces a significant financial commitment for this project. Mayor Travous Quibell, who was re-elected, described the approval as a pivotal moment for the community, although it also marks the end of an era for the old hall, which has been in service since the 1960s.
The aging condition of the existing building, which was deemed unsafe and condemned due to extensive age-related damage, necessitated the decision to seek funds for a new facility. The estimated cost of constructing the new hall exceeds $34 million. Besides serving as a community space, the new facility will also double as a warming shelter during cold weather and an emergency operations center in times of wildfires.
To secure additional financial support for the project, the town is reaching out to industry partners such as B.C. Hydro and oil and gas companies for contributions. Quibell emphasized the need to engage in fundraising activities to cover the remaining costs of the new hall.
The old community hall, which was closed in 2023 due to safety concerns, was recently demolished as remediating it was deemed financially unfeasible by the District of Hudson’s Hope. The referendum saw 174 votes in favor of borrowing funds and 156 votes against. In addition to the referendum results, new and incumbent council members were elected, with some familiar faces returning and new members joining the council.
Out of 769 eligible voters, 327 participated in the voting process, representing a turnout of approximately 43%. Quibell expressed his enthusiasm for collaborating with both returning and new council members and highlighted the importance of the upcoming provincial election results in shaping future relationships and initiatives for the town.
Overall, the approval to borrow funds for the new community hall signifies a significant development for Hudson’s Hope, paving the way for enhanced community facilities and services.
