The Prince Edward Island government and the University of Prince Edward Island websites were temporarily shut down on Wednesday due to security concerns related to the PHP programming language. PHP is a critical component of the internet and widely used in various websites, control panels, and platforms, making any vulnerabilities a potential threat to millions of servers. Two vulnerabilities were discovered by programmers, prompting the global shutdown of numerous websites to address the issues.
In response to the security risks, UPEI announced the temporary suspension of public-facing web services for emergency updates. Other universities and organizations across the country took similar precautionary measures. The Government of P.E.I. website and other provincial services were also taken offline as a proactive step to implement a global security patch on the underlying web infrastructure, with normal operations expected to resume the following day. The authorities assured that there was no impact on personal information.
A patch to fix the vulnerabilities was promptly released, with clients urged to apply the updates to their websites promptly.
